The Exchange

The heritage contribution

One and a half percent, every trade, to someone other than us

On every trade of every work, one and a half percent is paid to an institution the custodian nominates when the work is first offered.

It does not go to Orchid Way Collective.  It does not go to a foundation we control or advise.  That separation is the point, and it is structural rather than voluntary.

Why it is built this way

A house that curates works and also sells interests in them has an obvious conflict, and the ordinary way to paper over it is a charitable arm that quietly sends the money back to the same balance sheet.  We will not do that, because it would not survive scrutiny and should not.

The nominated institution is named in the offering record.  The contribution is calculated on trade value, not on profit, which means it is paid whether or not anyone made money.

What it produces

For a custodian, a recurring contribution attached to a work they still own, directed to a cause they chose.

For the category, a mechanism by which a market in Asian art funds the conservation and study of Asian art, rather than extracting from it.

Governance
